At the age of just twelve, he won the European Under-18 Championship, and the next year won the World-Under-18 Championship. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster at the age of fourteen in 1998, the youngest player at the time to have ever earned that title. He won a gold medal at the 2001 Chess Olympiad. In June 2011, he won the 80th Ukrainian Chess Championship, the strongest ever in the country, with 8½/11 and a rating performance of 2853.
